Iran threatens ‘Stargate’ AI data centers

In an alarming escalation of tensions, Iran has threatened to launch attacks on data centers across the Middle East, particularly targeting the U.S.-backed 'Stargate' AI data centers. This warning follows a series of threats and military actions from the United States, raising the stakes in an already volatile region.

Iran’s military spokesperson, Ebrahim Zolfaghari, stated in a widely circulated video that should the U.S. proceed with its threats of attacking Iranian civilian infrastructure, Iran would retaliate by targeting U.S. energy and technology facilities in the region. The statement underscores Iran's commitment to defending its national interests amid external pressures.

The video released by Iran prominently featured an image of a globe zooming in on the Stargate data center located in the United Arab Emirates, accompanied by the bold message, "nothing stays hidden to our sight, though hidden by Google." This statement reflects Iran's intent to assert its capabilities and surveillance reach over critical infrastructure supported by U.S. technology firms.

The Stargate initiative is a massive $500 billion joint venture involving OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle, aimed at building AI data centers globally. Announced in January 2025, the project faced initial delays due to funding issues and tariff-related costs. However, it has since gained momentum with plans for international expansion.

The backdrop of this threat involves U.S. President Trump’s recent declarations regarding potential strikes on Iranian civilian infrastructure, including power plants and water desalination facilities, if Iran does not allow the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. This strategic waterway has been critical for global shipping and has been a focal point of military tensions since the onset of conflict in February.

The threats from Iran come in the wake of missile strikes that have already targeted several data centers in the region amidst ongoing military conflicts. Notably, Iranian missiles struck Amazon Web Services (AWS) facilities in Bahrain and an Oracle data center in Dubai, further escalating the situation.

Additionally, Iran has issued threats directly against prominent tech companies, including Nvidia and Apple, signaling its broader displeasure with U.S. technological dominance and support for military actions in the region. These developments indicate a profound shift in the dynamics of technology and military strategy in the Middle East.

As the situation unfolds, the international community is closely monitoring these developments, with implications for global tech investments and military strategies. The threat to data centers not only highlights the intersection of technology and warfare but also raises concerns about the security of critical infrastructure in an age of rising geopolitical tensions.
