This pasta sauce wants to record your family

Prego, the well-known pasta and pizza sauce brand, is stepping into the tech world with an intriguing new product called the Connection Keeper. This innovative device is a screen-free voice recorder designed to capture and preserve conversations that take place around the dinner table. The goal is to encourage families to engage in meaningful conversations instead of being distracted by their phones.

The Connection Keeper, which bears a striking resemblance to an oversized metal lid from Prego jars, is the result of a collaboration with StoryCorps, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the stories of Americans. The device is designed to be offline and does not include any AI, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth capabilities. However, users have the option to upload their recordings to StoryCorps’ website, making it easier to share these precious family moments.

According to Prego, the intention behind the Connection Keeper is to foster a stronger familial bond through conversation. However, the company has decided to produce a very limited batch of fewer than 100 units, making it a unique offering. The device will be available for purchase online starting April 27th for $20. Each purchase comes as part of a bundle that includes the Connection Keeper, a jar of Prego sauce, spaghetti noodles, and a deck of cards featuring conversation prompts to inspire discussions during meals.

Using the Connection Keeper is straightforward. Families can simply place the device at the center of the dinner table and press one button to start recording. The device utilizes a pair of microphones to capture CD-quality audio onto a 16GB microSD card, allowing for up to eight hours of recording time when fully charged. This feature ensures that no meaningful moment goes unrecorded.

Once dinner has concluded, users can easily transfer their recordings to a computer using USB-C and subsequently upload them to a dedicated microsite created by StoryCorps. Here, the recordings are preserved and can only be accessed by the uploader unless they choose to share them with other StoryCorps users or the public. For those interested in archiving their conversations, there is even an option to store them within the Library of Congress, where they become publicly accessible.

While the recordings can be accessed via a smartphone with the StoryCorps app, Prego has intentionally designed the Connection Keeper to minimize the need for smartphones during family meals. By omitting a screen from the device, the focus remains on fostering direct communication among family members, rather than distractions from technology.

The Connection Keeper highlights a growing trend of tech products aimed at enhancing family interactions in an increasingly digital world. In a time where many families struggle to put down their devices, Prego’s initiative serves as a reminder of the importance of face-to-face conversation and shared experiences.

Conclusion

The Prego Connection Keeper is more than just a recording device; it is a tool for preserving family memories and encouraging meaningful dialogue at the dinner table. As it approaches its release date, families looking to enrich their mealtime experience might find this innovative product to be a worthwhile investment.
