History of Do Dham Yatra

The concept of Do Dham Yatra has originated from Char Dham Yatra. When people are unable to visit all the char Dhams due to lack of time or physical difficulty, they opt for Do Dham Yatra which includes darshan of Kedarnath and Badrinath. Both these Dhams are also mentioned in the religious texts of ancient India. Kedarnath is mentioned in the Mahabharata when the Pandavas came to the Himalayas to bathe Lord Shiva to seek salvation from their sins. Badrinath is mentioned in the Vishnu Purana where Lord Vishnu performed penance.

Kedarnath

Kedarnath is located in the heights of the Himalayas and is considered to be a form of Lord Shiva. It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. The Kedarnath temple was built by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. According to the story, after the Mahabharata war, the Pandavas came to find Lord Shiva to seek salvation from their sins. Lord Shiva took the form of a buffalo to escape from them and went into hiding. But when he was recognized, he revealed his rear end where the Kedarnath temple is located. This place is a sacred and power-filled center for devotees where the soul experiences a different kind of peace.

Badrinath

Badrinath temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. This temple is situated on the banks of Alaknanda river. Adi Shankaracharya also revived this temple. According to mythology, Lord Vishnu was absorbed in penance here under the feet of Badri. He was served by Mother Lakshmi, to protect whom from the cold, he took the form of Badri. Since then this place is famous as Badrinath. Devotees come to this Dham and enjoy devotion, reverence and dedication at the feet of Lord Vishnu.
